Gunmen Strike Again in Enugu, Kill Two Police Officers in Suspected IPOB-Linked Attack

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two Police Officers following a deadly attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Enugu metropolis.

Global Mirror News gathered that the incident occurred late Friday night at a stop-and-search point directly opposite the Police Detective College along Agbani Road.

The attackers reportedly opened fire on operatives of the Police Distress Response Squad (DRS), setting their patrol vehicle ablaze during the exchange.

The latest attack is the second fatal assault on Police Personnel in Enugu within a month.

On December 27, 2025, two Officers were similarly killed at Zik Avenue, where their Patrol van was also torched in a night-time ambush.

Although early reports claimed that four Officers were killed in Friday’s incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed in a statement that two Officers lost their lives. He disclosed that some of the attackers escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

According to Ndukwe, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has directed tactical and intelligence operatives to intensify the ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators.

“The suspected IPOB/ESN subversive criminal elements attacked a Police Distress Response Squad team along Agbani Road, Enugu, on the night of January 15, 2026,” he said.

He added that the gunmen opened fire without provocation, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire that forced the assailants to flee.

“During the encounter, the team’s operational vehicle was set on fire, while two Police Officers sustained severe gunshot injuries.

They were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention but were later confirmed dead by Medical pyersonnel,” Ndukwe stated.

The Police also confirmed the recovery of a Lexus RX 330 SUV allegedly snatched earlier from its owner and used by the attackers. The vehicle was reportedly riddled with multiple bullet holes from the shootout.

Commissioner Giwa has appealed to members of the public with credible information to assist Security Agencies in tracking down the suspects.

He reassured residents that the Command remains committed to restoring security and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
