Three Police Officers were killed in a brazen attack on a security checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, on Wednesday morning.

The gunmen, who stormed the checkpoint, engaged the Officers in a fierce gun battle before escaping with their rifles.

Details of the Attack

  • The attack happened between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, with the gunmen launching a surprise assault on the Police checkpoint.
  • The Police Officers were caught off guard, and despite putting up a fight, they were overpowered by the attackers.
  • The gunmen carted away the Officers’ rifles, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Police Response

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and deployed a tactical team to track down the attackers.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, assured that the Police are on the trail of the perpetrators, with the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, leading the efforts to apprehend the culprits.

In a related incident, bandits launched a deadly overnight attack on Bokungi in Tsaragi community, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and rustling several cows.

The incident occurred in a border town near Kwara State, where the attackers reportedly came through Bokungi, firing sporadically to scare residents.

They made off with nearly 700 cows belonging to Local Fulani settlements, specifically targeting the settlements of Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini.

Tragically, Alhaji Mumini’s son, Muhammadu, who recently got married, was killed during the raid.

The attack has heightened fears across Edu and surrounding Local Government Areas, with vigilantes forced to lead defense efforts amid growing insecurity.

The Police authorities in both Kogi and Kwara States are working to apprehend the attackers and bring them to justice.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with residents criticizing the security agencies for failing to act decisively to stop the attackers.
