Gunmen Assassinate APC Leader in Benue, Community in Shock

Tension has gripped Otukpo town following the reported assassination of a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Chief Ejeh Udeh, in the early hours of Monday, September 22.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred at Udeh’s Ugboju residence. Armed men on a motorcycle allegedly trailed the politician and laid an ambush near his home.

As soon as he returned, they reportedly surrounded him and opened fire at close range, killing him instantly.

Family members who were present, including his wife and children, are said to have witnessed the horrifying scene.

His remains were later deposited at the Otukpo General Hospital morgue.

A Political Pillar in Otukpo
Chief Udeh was a well-known grassroots mobiliser and one of the APC’s most influential figures in Otukpo Local Government Area.

He was regarded as a bridge-builder within the party, often playing a key role in uniting factions ahead of elections.

His ability to connect with both youth and elders in the community earned him a reputation as one of the party’s strongest political strategists in Benue South.

Colleagues within the APC described his assassination as “a devastating blow” to the party’s structure in the area, especially as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

Calls for Justice
The killing has sparked fear and outrage among residents, with many describing the incident as a “well-coordinated assassination.”

Community leaders are calling for swift intervention by security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore calm.

While official confirmation from the Benue State Police Command is still awaited, analysts warn that the brazen attack highlights the growing threats facing political actors in Nigeria.

Rising Insecurity
Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing rise in politically linked violence in recent years, with politicians, traditional rulers, and community leaders increasingly targeted by armed groups.

Observers warn that if such incidents are left unchecked, they could inflame political tensions and undermine democratic processes ahead of future elections.

Residents have urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Benue State Government to launch a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and reassure citizens of their safety.
