Govt Under Pressure as Drunkards Association Demands Price Reduction

The Ghana Drunkards Association has given the Government a three-week ultimatum to reduce alcohol prices, warning of a massive Nationwide protest involving 16.65 million members if their demands aren’t met. The Association cites the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, which has strengthened against major International Currencies, as justification for immediate price reductions.
Key Demands:
–Price Reduction: The Association demands a reduction in prices of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
– Government Meeting: They want to meet with President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Trade and Industry within three weeks to discuss price reduction strategies.
– Nationwide Protest: If no action is taken, the association threatens to stage a massive nationwide protest.
The Ghanaian Cedi has appreciated nearly 50% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing Currency Globally so far this year.
Despite this, alcohol prices continue to rise, with a 15% increment affecting vendors and consumers.
The Association argues that the strengthened currency should translate to lower prices for imported goods, including alcohol.
