Governor Sanwo-Olu Orders Demolition of Fire-Ravaged GNI Building After Massive Blaze

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has ordered the demolition of the fire‑ravaged Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following a devastating fire that left the high-rise structure severely compromised.

The Governor issued the directive after conducting an on-site inspection on Thursday, December 25, 2025, surveying the extensive damage caused by the massive blaze, which erupted late Wednesday.

Preliminary assessments revealed that sections of the 25-storey building had partially collapsed, raising serious safety concerns for neighbouring structures and residents.

Governor Sanwo‑Olu confirmed that no fatalities have been recorded, though seven to ten people sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns.

He emphasized that the safety of residents and commercial occupants remains a top priority.

A technical committee, led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, has been set up to determine the safest method for demolishing the compromised GNI tower.

Demolition is expected to begin in the coming days, once the remaining fire has been fully extinguished.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, FRSC, and LASTMA, continue to manage the scene, prevent secondary flare-ups, and secure the surrounding Areas.

The fire has reportedly affected over ten nearby structures, causing partial or severe damage to some due to the dense layout of the commercial district.

Governor Sanwo‑Olu also used the occasion to caution business owners and residents on fire safety, particularly during the dry season, when harmattan conditions increase the risk of fire incidents.
