Gov. Abiodun Disburses N474m to Ogun NSF 2024 Medalists, Coaches, Officials

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has fulfilled his pledge to reward athletes who represented the State at the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), disbursing a total of N474 million to medalists, coaches and officials.
The cheque presentation ceremony was held on Monday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun had, in May 2025, promised cash rewards of N2.5 million for gold medalists, N1.5 million for silver medalists, and N1 million for bronze medalists. Team Ogun delivered an outstanding performance at the festival, finishing second overall with 93 gold, 65 silver and 81 bronze medals — a total of 239 medals, surpassing its previous record.
Represented at the ceremony by the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the Governor said 239 athletes and an additional 300 officials benefited from the rewards package, describing it as recognition of excellence, diligence and hard work.
He noted that the total cash outlay exceeded N450 million for the state contingent, setting a new benchmark in the history of the National Sports Festival.
According to him, Ogun’s successful hosting of the festival for the second time underscores the state’s capacity, credibility and commitment to national development through sports.
“Team Ogun did not merely host but competed with exceptional distinction, securing an impressive second position with 239 medals.
This achievement reflects the discipline of our athletes, the expertise of our coaches and the effectiveness of our investments in sports infrastructure and human capital,” he said.
Abiodun recalled that during an unscheduled visit to the Team Ogun camp at the Games Village, his administration pledged to reward their dedication.
He confirmed that all statutory obligations — including training allowances, participation allowances and contract fees — had been fully settled.
He further disclosed that N50,000 was earlier paid to each athlete who qualified to represent the State, while instant cash awards were disbursed to medalists before the festival’s closing ceremony.
Providing a breakdown of the latest disbursement, the Governor said each of the 93 gold medalists received N2.5 million; silver medalists got N1.5 million each; and bronze medalists received N1 million each.
Additional incentives were approved for team sports participants in recognition of their numerical strength.
Members of the contingent also received souvenirs, including festival bags, water flasks and umbrellas. In addition, the Governor approved N10 million for State coaches and N14.8 million for administrative staff.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, described the cash rewards as symbolic gestures of appreciation that reflect the Government’s commitment to sports development.
He said the administration’s consistent investment in facilities and manpower has produced measurable growth, attracting major competitions to the State.
“In the last eight months, our facilities have hosted high-profile events such as the CAF Champions League — the first since 2001 — the African Athletics U18 and U20 Championships involving 52 African countries, matches featuring the Super Eagles, and several local leagues. Our sports facilities are now active almost weekly,” Isiaka said.
He urged athletes and coaches to sustain the momentum as Ogun State prepares for the 23rd National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Enugu State.
