Gov. Abiodun Celebrates Mama Onabanjo’s Legacy, Backs Completion of Cathedral in Her Memory

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has extolled the virtues of the late Lucia Onabanjo, describing her as a pillar of moral strength and quiet resilience whose influence left a lasting imprint on family life and public service in the state.

Speaking at her Funeral Mass held at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, the Governor announced that the Ogun State Government would support the completion of the cathedral project as a tribute to her enduring legacy.

Abiodun noted that Mama Onabanjo lived a disciplined and modest life, consciously avoiding public limelight while earning admiration for her humility, deep faith and principled lifestyle. He stressed that her contributions were expressed not through elective office but through the values she upheld and transmitted within her family and community.

According to the Governor, her life underscores the indispensable role of women in nation-building, particularly through moral guidance, strength of character and unwavering support for leadership behind the scenes.

“In recognition of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will ensure the completion of this cathedral project so it remains a permanent testament to her life of faith and service,” Abiodun assured, pledging prompt execution of the intervention.

He further recalled her steadfast support for her husband, Olabisi Onabanjo, especially during turbulent political periods, including his detention after the 1983 military coup. The Governor said her calm fortitude during those trying times reflected uncommon courage and spiritual depth.

Delivering the homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described the deceased as a silent achiever whose unobtrusive contributions strengthened both her family and the church community. He added that her life of devotion and integrity would continue to inspire future generations.

The solemn ceremony drew an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including former Governors, Lawmakers, Traditional Rulers and Political Leaders from across Ogun State and beyond.
