Gateway Airport Moves Toward International Operations, Plans Hajj Flights Launch

The Gateway International Airport is moving closer to commencing International passenger operations as the Ogun State Government intensifies preparations to begin flights for the annual Hajj to the Saudi Arabia.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy by the administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun to strengthen aviation infrastructure, stimulate economic growth and position the State as a key aviation and logistics hub in the South-West region of Nigeria.

Government officials said the move comes as the State edges closer to fully operationalising the airport, which has been developed to serve travellers, investors and businesses within Ogun and neighbouring States.

As part of the preparations, Governor Abiodun has initiated a series of high-level engagements with key Federal Agencies whose statutory responsibilities are critical to launching International passenger and cargo services at the airport.

The discussions are aimed at ensuring the facility meets all regulatory and operational requirements ahead of its planned International debut. Key focus areas include security architecture, passenger processing systems, deployment of specialised personnel and full compliance with aviation regulations under the supervision of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.

To coordinate the process, the Governor mandated aviation consultant and Accountable Manager of the airport, Dapo Olumide, to lead consultations with the relevant federal Agencies.

Olumide has already held meetings with officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service, whose delegation was led by Assistant Comptroller-General B. Mohammed.

Further consultations with other Federal Institutions are ongoing as the State Government works to ensure the timely deployment of operational infrastructure and personnel required for International passenger processing and cargo operations.

When fully operational, Gateway International Airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate pilgrimage travel and improve cargo movement for businesses.

The facility is also projected to complement aviation operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, while positioning Ogun State as an emerging centre for aviation-linked commerce and logistics in the South-West.
