FRSC Scraps Temporary Licence

A new era in Nigeria’s driver’s licence system is underway as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) prepares to scrap the temporary Driver’s licence, introducing a contactless biometric capture and instant printing model aimed at speeding up issuance and improving efficiency Nationwide.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, announced the reform during an inspection of the Corps’ upgraded printing facility in Abuja, where he revealed that the new system now produces an average of 15,000 Driver’s licences daily.

According to him, the enhanced production capacity will help the agency clear all existing licence backlogs before the second week of November 2025.

“Our printing facility has been upgraded to print an average of 15,000 licences daily. This capacity will increase further until all pending applications are cleared,” Mohammed said.

“The contactless biometric capture and on-the-spot printing will make temporary licences obsolete as we move towards a digital one-stop processing system.”

The Corps Marshal explained that the transition will not only eliminate delays that have plagued licence applicants for years but also mark the beginning of a fully digitalised FRSC service framework for both driver’s licences and vehicle number plates.

Beyond the licence reform, Mohammed also flagged off the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in Abuja, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

He revealed sobering figures from recent FRSC records, noting that 3,433 people were killed and 22,162 injured in 6,858 road crashes between January and September 2025, while 432 deaths and 2,070 injuries were recorded during the 2024 Operation Zero campaign.

He attributed most of the crashes to driver fatigue, overloading, transportation of people in haulage vehicles, and carrying fuel in plastic containers.

“Driver behaviour remains a fundamental factor in highway safety,” Mohammed emphasised. “The theme for this year’s campaign was deliberately chosen to address reckless driving and the human element responsible for most road crashes.”

The Corps said it is intensifying public sensitisation to ensure safer roads as the festive season approaches.
