Forest Guard in Police Custody Over Alleged Fatal Shooting of Son

A Forest Guard member in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State has been arrested following the alleged fatal shooting of his 24-year-old son inside an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp.

Global Mirror News gathered that the tragic incident occurred on February 13, 2026, at about 5:40 p.m. at the RRR IDPs Camp in Monguno, throwing the camp community into mourning.

According to security sources, the matter was reported to the Monguno Police Division at about 6:20 p.m. by Maidugu Mustapha of Gana Ali Ward. The report alleged that the suspect, identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Angoli, a serving Forest Guard operative, shot his son, Ajiya Mustapha, in the back with an AK-47 rifle during an altercation.

On receipt of the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Monguno reportedly mobilised a patrol team to the scene. Global Mirror News gathered that officers documented the area, recovered relevant evidence and rushed the victim to the General Hospital, Monguno.

A medical doctor on duty later confirmed the young man dead on arrival. His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy in line with standard investigative procedure.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody, while the rifle allegedly used in the incident was recovered and secured as an exhibit. The case has since been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Maiduguri for detailed investigation.

Although the motive behind the alleged shooting has not yet been officially disclosed, the development has heightened tension within the IDP camp and surrounding communities.

Police authorities have assured that a comprehensive investigation is ongoing and that anyone found responsible will be prosecuted accordingly.
