Flames Engulf Kano’s Singa Market Again, Traders Suffer Heavy Losses

Traders and shoppers at the popular Singa Market in Kano were thrown into panic on Saturday February 14 evening as a fresh fire outbreak gutted parts of the historic marketplace, destroying goods worth millions of naira, Global Mirror News reports.
According to eyewitnesses, the inferno reportedly started at a large provision store located at the Gidan Gashash area and rapidly spread to neighboring stalls, engulfing merchandise and causing massive smoke that could be seen from afar.
Residents rushed to the scene in a bid to salvage goods, but the intensity of the flames made rescue efforts nearly impossible.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, explaining that fire service personnel and vehicles had been immediately mobilized to contain the blaze. He added,
“The lack of access roads within the market and heavy human and vehicular traffic are slowing our response. We are doing everything possible to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.”
This latest inferno comes barely two weeks after another devastating fire on February 2, 2026, destroyed three large stores at Singa Market, resulting in significant losses for traders.
Following that tragedy, Governor Abba Yusuf had personally visited the market and donated N100 million to support affected traders.
Many of them are now facing renewed financial strain as they attempt to rebuild their businesses once more.
Local traders are urging State authorities to implement stricter safety measures and fire prevention strategies to avoid recurrent disasters in one of Kano’s busiest commercial hubs.
Market officials and residents have called for better access routes, installation of firefighting equipment, and regular safety drills to mitigate future risks.
The repeated fire outbreaks highlight the vulnerability of urban markets in Nigeria to disasters, with traders often left at the mercy of uncontrolled incidents. As investigations continue, the cause of the Saturday fire remains unknown.
