FG Slashes Dialysis Cost by 76%, Lists Hospitals for Subsidised Treatment

In a major relief for Nigerians battling kidney-related ailments, the Federal Government has announced a 76 per cent reduction in the cost of dialysis sessions across selected public hospitals in the Country.
Under the new subsidy approved by President Bola Tinubu, the cost of a single dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000, representing one of the largest medical cost interventions in recent years.
The initiative, coordinated through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, aims to make life-saving treatment more affordable for patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases, which have become increasingly common across Nigeria.
According to the Ministry, the subsidised treatment is now available in the following Federal and Teaching Hospitals:
Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja
University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City
University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare, Bauchi
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi
Government officials noted that the intervention would later be expanded to include more Federal Medical Centres and Specialist Hospitals across the six geopolitical zones.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of healthcare in Nigeria and the inability of many kidney patients to afford routine dialysis sessions.
Health experts have commended the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward universal health coverage and improved access to essential treatment for vulnerable Nigerians.
