The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to commemorate Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been set aside as a public holiday to mark the New Year.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to the statement, the declaration is in line with the government’s tradition of recognizing major religious and national celebrations, while allowing citizens adequate time to celebrate with family and loved ones.

He encouraged citizens to extend these virtues beyond the celebrations by fostering unity and tolerance across religious and ethnic lines.
Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to pray for the Country’s peace, stability and continued development, stressing that collective responsibility remains key to national growth.
While wishing citizens joyful celebrations, the Interior Minister advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the holiday period.
He emphasized the importance of personal and community safety, especially as increased travel and social activities are expected during the festivities.
The Minister further extended his warm wishes to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, praying that the New Year would usher in renewed hope, prosperity and progress for the Nation.
