Festival of Fear: Outrage as Women Allegedly Assaulted in Ozoro Sparks Police Crackdown

A wave of anger and concern has swept across Nigeria following disturbing reports that several young women were attacked during a controversial cultural event in Ozoro, a community in Delta State.

According to information gathered by Global Mirror News, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, during an annual festival reportedly marked by a long-standing but deeply troubling practice that restricts women from appearing in public. Any woman seen outdoors during the period is allegedly targeted by groups of men enforcing the tradition.

Eyewitness accounts and viral videos circulating online show chaotic scenes where young men pursued women on the streets, physically harassed them, and forcibly tore their clothing. Some victims were visibly distressed, crying out for help as bystanders watched helplessly.

There are also allegations that the situation escalated into more severe forms of abuse, though authorities are still verifying these claims.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the Police have commenced investigations and have already made arrests in connection with the incident. He assured that justice would be pursued and that a comprehensive statement from the command is expected.

The incident has ignited widespread condemnation on social media, with Nigerians demanding accountability and questioning cultural practices that endanger the safety and dignity of women. Many have called on both law enforcement and community leaders to take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.

Global Mirror News understands that advocacy groups are also pushing for broader conversations around human rights, cultural reform, and the protection of vulnerable groups across communities.
