Fatal Dispute Over N100 Ticket Sparks Ogun Okada Riders’ Protest
Tension gripped parts of Ijoko, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday as motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, staged a protest following the fatal stabbing of one of their colleagues by a transport Union levy collector, commonly referred to as an agbero.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Tuesday February 4 night when a disagreement over a ₦100 ticket fee escalated into violence. One of the agberos allegedly stabbed the Okada rider during the argument, resulting in his death.
Ganiyu, an Okada rider who witnessed the clash, told Global Mirror News:
“The man was stabbed to death by one of the agberos during an argument over the ticket. The agbero suddenly brought out a knife and stabbed him.”
Rasheed, another rider, added that two people were stabbed during the dispute, with one surviving while the other succumbed to injuries. He said:
“They were fighting over a N100 ticket. It started as a small argument before it escalated on Tuesday night. The person who was killed is one of the motorcyclists from Nasarawa. His colleagues are confronting agberos in Lambe, Ijoko, and parts of Akute now.”
The protest saw riders from Lambe, Agbado, and Akute communities taking to the streets, challenging agbero members and demanding justice for their colleague’s death.
Reports indicate that Police intervened and made some arrests during the confrontation, though official confirmation is still pending.
Attempts by Global Mirror News to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, for details of arrests were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The incident has heightened tensions between Okada riders and agberos in the state, raising concerns over the safety of commercial motorcyclists in the region.
