Fake Cops Busted: Five Arrested in Kano with Warrant Cards, Handcuffs, and Cash

The Kano State Police Command has uncovered a criminal syndicate of fake Police Officers operating across the metropolis, arresting five men who had allegedly been extorting unsuspecting citizens under the guise of law enforcement.

The suspects — Aliyu Abbas (35), Sani Iliyasu (47), Ashiru Sule (41), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Adamu Kalilu (45) — were arrested on Thursday by operatives of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) following credible intelligence reports about their suspicious activities.

Confirming the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspects were nabbed while attempting to intimidate and extort motorists along the Zaria Road axis of the city.

According to Kiyawa, the men were found with a fake police warrant card, a pair of handcuffs, mutilated naira notes, CFA 2,500, and a blue Peugeot 406 vehicle believed to have been used to impersonate security patrol units.

“The suspects were caught in the act, pretending to be officers on duty. During interrogation, they failed to provide any legitimate identification or explain how they came into possession of police items,” Kiyawa said.

He added that preliminary investigation revealed the group had been operating for several weeks, targeting commercial drivers and traders in different parts of Kano. The gang reportedly stopped vehicles, conducted illegal searches, and collected money from their victims in the name of ‘settlement.’

The Police spokesperson assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to trace other members of the syndicate and identify victims who may have fallen prey to their criminal activities.

Kiyawa also warned residents to be cautious and always demand proper identification from anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer, stressing that the command would not tolerate acts that tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We want to assure the good people of Kano that the command remains fully committed to protecting lives and property. Anyone caught impersonating a security agent will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.
