The Ogun State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, set a reverent tone for its 2025 Local Government Service Week with a solemn Inter-Religions prayer session held at the open ground of the Commission’s Secretariat in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The spiritually charged gathering signaled the official flag-off of a weeklong celebration dedicated to honouring excellence, professionalism, and dedication among Local Government workers across the State.
The event witnessed a large turnout of dignitaries, including Commissioners, Directors, Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs), Departmental Heads, and staff from all 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State. Representatives of both the Christian and Muslim faiths offered prayers of thanksgiving and supplication, symbolizing the Commission’s commitment to inclusiveness and unity.
In her opening remarks, the Commission’s Chairman, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, expressed deep gratitude to God for His continued guidance and protection over the Local Government workforce. She said the prayer session was not just a formality but a conscious act of spiritual grounding that reflects the Commission’s values.
“Starting this important week with prayers is our way of acknowledging God’s hand in sustaining our workforce, preserving peace in our Local Government system, and granting us the grace to serve the people diligently,” she stated.
Ms. Onabanjo further noted that the 2025 Service Week would highlight the achievements of the Commission over the past year and strengthen the bond among staff members. She reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to continue promoting a culture of transparency, accountability, and motivation within the Local Government system.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Otunba Koye Martins Ijaduoye, in his welcome address, praised the Commission’s leadership for its foresight and encouragement. He described the Service Week as “a time for reflection, recognition, and reawakening of the spirit of service among Local Government employees.”
According to him, “The Local Government Service Week serves as a morale booster, reminding workers of the crucial role they play in grassroots administration and public service delivery. It is a celebration of commitment, hard work, and excellence.”
The Inter-Religions session featured scriptural readings, hymns, and special prayers for the success of the Commission and the continued peace and prosperity of Ogun State. Alhaji Nureni Odunbaku offered Islamic prayers, seeking divine mercy, protection, and wisdom for the Commission’s leadership, while Venerable (Dr.) Dele Alonge, who took his sermon from Psalm 103:1–3, emphasized the importance of gratitude and consistent devotion to duty.
“We must always give thanks to God for His faithfulness. Gratitude opens doors to greater blessings, and it is through service with thanksgiving that we build stronger institutions,” Ven. Alonge said.
In her vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Engr. Olanike Ogunbona, FNSE, lauded the collective spirit of the workforce and expressed appreciation to the Chairman, Management, HOLGAs, and all staff for their presence and participation. She commended the Planning Committee for the professionalism and creativity put into organizing the opening ceremony.
“This prayer session has not only set the tone for the week but has also reaffirmed our unity and shared purpose. We look forward to a fulfilling Service Week that will inspire better performance at all levels of the Local Government,” she remarked.
The Inter-Religions Prayer Service gathering, which ended with a special thanksgiving and musical renditions by the LGSC Choir, left participants in a mood of joy and reflection.
The 2025 Local Government Service Week continues with a rich lineup of events, including a Cultural Evening to showcase the state’s diverse heritage, a Public Lecture addressing innovations in Local Governance, and a Gala/Award Night, where outstanding staff and stakeholders will be recognized for their contributions to grassroots administration and public service.
The weeklong celebration underscores the Commission’s vision of building a dynamic, disciplined, and motivated workforce capable of driving sustainable development at the local level.
