Excitement, Crowd Surge Mar Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Distribution in Imo

An empowerment programme held under the Renewed Hope South-East Youth Tour in Owerri, Imo State, was disrupted on Saturday after a large crowd surged toward the distribution point, leading to participants carting away several empowerment items.

The event, organised by the City Boy Movement, attracted thousands of young people from across the South-East who gathered to participate in activities aimed at promoting youth engagement and economic empowerment.

Global Mirror News gathered that the disruption occurred during the second day of the two-day programme, which featured an empowerment rally where items were scheduled to be distributed to participants.

In a statement released on Sunday, the National Publicity Secretary of the movement, Emana-Amawhe Ambrose, explained that the distribution process initially began in an orderly manner before the crowd became uncontrollable.

According to him, the excitement among the large number of youths present caused participants to rush toward the distribution area, eventually breaching barricades that had been set up to manage the exercise.

“As the enthusiasm of the large crowd surged toward the designated distribution area, the barricades were breached and the remaining empowerment items were accessed by members of the crowd before the structured distribution could be concluded,” he stated.

Despite the disruption, the group maintained that the overall programme was successful, noting that the turnout demonstrated strong interest among youths in empowerment opportunities.

The event commenced with a policy summit that brought together youth leaders, entrepreneurs, policy experts and public officials to discuss governance, enterprise development and access to finance.

The summit also explored ways young Nigerians can contribute to national development and take advantage of economic opportunities provided under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ambrose noted that the discussions provided a platform for dialogue and the exchange of ideas on how youths can play a more active role in economic growth and nation-building.

He further dismissed negative portrayals of the incident by some commentators, insisting that they did not reflect the broader impact of the programme.

The City Boy Movement reaffirmed its commitment to promoting youth participation in governance and supporting initiatives that create opportunities for young Nigerians.

The organisation also stressed that the large turnout at the Owerri event highlighted the growing interest of youths in programmes designed to support enterprise development and economic participation.
