Excitement as First Commercial Flight Lands at Ogun’s Gateway International Airport

Joy and celebration filled the air on Monday as Ogun State’s Gateway International Airport in Ilishan-Remo recorded its first-ever commercial flight, signaling a major milestone in the State’s quest to become an aviation and economic hub in the South-West.

The historic flight, operated by ValueJet, took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and landed to a rousing welcome from Government Officials, aviation stakeholders, traditional rulers, and jubilant residents who gathered to witness the moment.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, visibly delighted, described the event as a fulfillment of his administration’s promise to transform Ogun into a centre of investment and development.

“This is not just an airport; it’s a symbol of our determination to make Ogun a preferred destination for business, tourism, and innovation,” the Governor said.

“Today, we have opened a new chapter in our state’s economic story.”

The Gateway International Airport, equipped with a 4-kilometre runway and modern terminal facilities, is designed to handle both passenger and cargo operations.

It is expected to serve major industrial corridors in Sagamu, Ibafo, and Abeokuta while attracting international investors to the State.

ValueJet’s Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Dapo Majekodunmi, hailed the launch as “a proud moment for Nigerian aviation,” adding that the airline plans to commence regular commercial flights from the new Airport to major cities across the Country.

“This partnership with Ogun State reflects our shared vision of expanding safe and convenient air travel for Nigerians,” Majekodunmi said.

For residents of Ilishan-Remo and surrounding communities, the event was nothing short of transformative.

“I never believed I’d see a commercial plane land here in my lifetime,” said Mrs. Folake Adebayo, a food vendor who joined the crowd to watch the landing.

“Business will grow, more people will come, and our children will see a better future.”

Another resident, Mr. Tunde Olatunji, said the airport would help open up the area to trade and employment.

“People will no longer need to travel to Lagos for flights. This means more jobs and more opportunities for our youths,” he said.

Several passengers on the maiden flight expressed excitement at being part of history. One of them, a businessman, Mr. Emmanuel Okafor, described the experience as “seamless and symbolic.”

“The landing was smooth, and the airport facilities are impressive. It’s clear Ogun is ready to compete with the best,” Okafor said.

The launch of the Gateway International Airport has officially placed Ogun State on Nigeria’s aviation map—an achievement that blends infrastructure, vision, and the aspirations of a people ready to soar.
