Eight UNIJOS Students Killed as Speeding Bus Crashes Into Trailer on Zaria Road, Jos

Eight male students of the University of Jos have been confirmed dead following a fatal road crash involving a trailer and a commercial bus in the early hours of Thursday along Zaria Road, opposite Unity Bank in Jos, Plateau State.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m., with eyewitnesses reporting that the bus—which had eleven occupants—was speeding and attempted a wrongful overtaking before the driver lost control and collided with an oncoming trailer.

According to witnesses, seven passengers died instantly, while four others were rushed to the hospital. One of the injured victims later died, bringing the death toll to eight. The remaining three are currently receiving treatment.

“All eleven occupants were young men. Most of them died instantly due to the impact,” an eyewitness said.

The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued on Thursday.

He said, “Today, 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call at about 0230 hours, reporting a road traffic crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos. The crash involved two vehicles, a trailer and a bus carrying eleven students of the University of Jos.”

Longsan said medical personnel certified seven victims dead at the scene, while one more died in the hospital. The remaining three victims are undergoing treatment.

Sector Commander of the FRSC Plateau, Olajide Mogaji, expressed concern over the frequency of fatal crashes, particularly at night. He urged motorists to obey traffic rules and avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking, night travel, and driving under fatigue or the influence of substances.
