Eight-Month-Old Baby, Woman Killed in Lagos Horror Crash

A quiet Sunday along Lagos’ ever-busy Ikorodu Road turned tragic as a fatal road accident claimed the lives of an eight-month-old baby and an adult woman, leaving at least ten others seriously injured and a community in deep mourning.

The devastating crash occurred opposite Olabode House, between the Anthony and Obanikoro axis, when a red long Tata commercial bus travelling from Palmgroove towards Anthony reportedly lost mechanical and directional control at high speed.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in an official statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq. According to preliminary findings, the Tata bus was allegedly being driven at an excessive and dangerous speed before the driver suddenly lost control.

“In a catastrophic sequence of events, the bus veered off its lane, forcefully breached the concrete median barrier and careened into the opposing carriageway,” LASTMA said. “It then collided violently with a Volkswagen commercial bus conveying passengers from Anthony towards Palmgroove.”

The impact of the collision was described as severe, resulting in the instant death of an adult female passenger in the Volkswagen bus. An eight-month-old female infant also succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, a loss that has drawn widespread sympathy and outrage over road safety conditions.

Emergency responders from LASTMA, assisted by members of the public, swiftly moved in to rescue trapped victims from the mangled vehicles. A total of ten injured passengers, including the drivers of both buses, were successfully extricated from the wreckage.

LASTMA disclosed that six passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen commercial bus, while four others were evacuated from the red Tata bus. All the survivors sustained varying degrees of serious injuries and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical care.

Security at the scene was provided by officers from the Ilupeju Police Division, while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit recovered the bodies of the deceased and carried out necessary sanitation measures.

Reacting to the tragic incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed profound condolences to the bereaved families, particularly the mother of the deceased infant, who survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.

Describing the accident as a moment of collective grief, Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey traffic rules, especially speed limits, warning that reckless driving continues to cost innocent lives on Lagos roads. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims receiving treatment in hospitals across the city.
