Eight Feared Dead as Terrorists Detonate IED, Destroy Bridge in Niger

At least eight persons have been feared dead following a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attack allegedly carried out by suspected terrorists in Niger State.

Global Mirror News gathered that the victims were travelling in a vehicle along the Luma axis in Borgu Local Government Area when the vehicle reportedly ran over the explosive device, triggering a fatal blast.

Sources disclosed that the IED was planted by terrorists who had earlier targeted and destroyed a strategic bridge along Luma Road, linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities.

The bridge serves as a critical route for residents and traders, particularly those accessing the popular Babana border market, which holds every Monday.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the ill-fated vehicle was en route between Nuku and Woro when it stepped on the explosive, killing all seven passengers and the driver on the spot.

The attack has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Niger State, especially in border communities where armed groups have reportedly intensified operations.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said the explosion occurred in the early hours of Monday.

According to him, “At about 6:30 am on March 23, 2026, a report was received indicating that around 2:00 am, suspected terrorists operating within the Park Forest Area detonated an explosive device, destroying a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA.”

He added that security operatives have since commenced clearance operations in the Area while monitoring continues to prevent further attacks.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-Central region, with authorities urging heightened vigilance among residents.
