A fatal road crash in the early hours of Friday, December 9, 2026, claimed the lives of a commercial bus Driver and his Conductor along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Global Mirror News gathered.

The accident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at Oremeji Bus Stop, inbound Lagos, when a Mazda commercial bus conveying live chicks lost control and crashed into the road median before somersaulting.

According to information obtained by Global Mirror News, the bus, with registration number YNF 414 XN, was allegedly travelling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the deadly impact that killed both occupants instantly.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, told Global Mirror News that eyewitnesses attributed the crash to excessive speeding and loss of control.

“A fatal accident occurred at Oremeji Bus Stop, inbound Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, at about 1:30 a.m.

An eyewitness account revealed that the bus was speeding, hit the barrier and somersaulted. Sadly, the driver and his conductor died in the accident,” Akinbiyi said.

Global Mirror News report further revealed that the victims, whose identities were yet to be confirmed as of press time, were evacuated to a nearby morgue, while the accident vehicle, loaded with live chickens, was towed by Officers of the Ibafo Motor Traffic Division Police to the nearest Police formation for further investigation.

While commiserating with the families of the deceased, the TRACE spokesperson warned motorists against reckless driving, particularly excessive speed, noting that such behaviour often leads to avoidable loss of lives on major highways.

The latest incident underscores growing concerns over road safety in the South-West.

Global Mirror News gathered that no fewer than 12 people lost their lives in multiple road accidents across Lagos and Ogun states during the New Year celebrations, with traffic authorities attributing the crashes to speeding, dangerous driving and mechanical faults.

As investigations continue, Traffic Officials have renewed calls for strict compliance with road safety regulations to reduce the rising toll of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.
