Doctors’ Strike Looms as NMA Ultimatum Draws to a Close

The Nigerian Medical Association’s 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government is set to expire on July 23, and the Association has warned that it will embark on a Nationwide strike if its demands are not met.
The dispute centers around a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which revised allowances for Medical and Dental Officers in the Federal Public Service. The NMA has rejected the circular, citing provisions that were not mutually agreed upon and which undermine the remuneration and welfare of medical professionals.
The NMA has demanded that the Federal Government withdraw the circular and meet its other demands to avert industrial action in the health sector. The Association’s President, Prof Bala Audu, stressed that the demands were critical to the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the welfare of medical professionals across the Country.
A nationwide strike by Doctors would have severe consequences for the Country’s healthcare system. Patients would be forced to seek medical attention elsewhere, and the healthcare system would be severely disrupted.
The Federal Government has been urged to take immediate action to meet the NMA’s demands and avert a strike. The Government has a responsibility to ensure that the healthcare system is not disrupted, and that patients receive the medical attention they need.
In a recent meeting between the NMA and Government stakeholders, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, acknowledged the NMA’s concerns and proposed a further meeting to resolve the issue. However, the meeting was postponed due to the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
As the NMA’s ultimatum draws to a close, it remains to be seen whether the Federal Government will meet the Association’s demands. The potential consequences of a nationwide strike by Doctors are severe, and it is hoped that the Government will take immediate action to avert a crisis. The NMA’s threat of a strike has raised concerns about the potential impact on the country’s healthcare system, and it is essential that the Government takes the necessary steps to resolve the issue.
