Dispatch Rider Crushed to Death by Train in Ikeja

LASTMA Warns Against Reckless Crossing

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has renewed its appeal for caution and strict compliance with traffic regulations following a tragic accident involving a moving train and a dispatch rider at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja on Thursday, October 16, 2025

According to a statement by the Agency, the fatal incident occurred when the rider, identified by his motorcycle registration number AGL 179 QR, attempted to beat an oncoming train while crossing the tracks near the route leading to Ikeja GRA. He was struck and killed instantly.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the victim ignored the warning signals and sped across the railway line despite indications of an approaching train.

“He was riding very fast and refused to wait. Before anyone could stop him, the train hit him,” one witness recounted.

The train, unable to halt immediately, continued on its route after the collision. LASTMA officials promptly arrived to control traffic and cordon off the area, while officers from the Shogunle Police Division joined in to maintain order.

Personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) later removed the deceased’s body from the scene.

In a statement, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased.

He described the crash as a painful reminder of the dangers of impatience and non-compliance with safety rules at railway crossings.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to always obey warning signals and exercise patience when approaching rail tracks, emphasizing that “no journey is worth a life.”
