Delta Assembly Uncovers Fund Scandal at Polytechnic

A sweeping probe by the Delta State House of Assembly has exposed a financial scandal rocking the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, leading to the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, and its Bursar for six months.

The Assembly reached the decision after adopting the report of its investigative committee, which found evidence of alleged financial recklessness, misappropriation of funds, and administrative abuse within the polytechnic’s management.

Presiding over the plenary, Speaker Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor said the committee’s findings revealed “multiple instances of unauthorized expenditures and gross administrative lapses” during Professor Achuenu’s tenure, describing his conduct as “a clear abuse of office.”

Lawmakers accused the Rector of ignoring directives from the Governing Council and violating established financial procedures — acts they said undermined the institution’s integrity.

The Assembly also upheld an earlier six-month suspension imposed by the Governing Council, insisting that the measure was crucial to restoring accountability and discipline within the school.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Ministry of Higher Education has been directed to oversee the polytechnic’s affairs during the suspension period to ensure transparency and adherence to due process.

The lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to stamping out corruption in public institutions, stressing that the Assembly would not tolerate any breach of financial discipline in the State’s education sector.
