Deadly Suicide Bombing Rocks Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State
Tragedy struck in Borno State on Wednesday evening as a suicide bomber attacked the Gambarou Jumu’at Mosque in Maiduguri, leaving many worshippers dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailant entered the mosque during the Maghrib congregational prayer and detonated explosives at the very start of the first raka’at. Survivors described a scene of chaos and panic as congregants scrambled to escape the blast.
“The bomber detonated when the first raka’at of the Maghrib prayer was observed. Many worshippers died, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” one survivor recounted.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Boko Haram remains a likely suspect, given the organization’s history of orchestrating suicide bombings across northeastern Nigeria in recent months.
Authorities are yet to release an official casualty count as rescue operations continue and security forces secure the area.
This incident marks another grim chapter in Borno State’s ongoing struggle with militant violence, highlighting the persistent threat to civilians and places of worship in the region.
