Deadly Ota Crash: Ogun Cracks Down on Roadside Trading
The Ogun State Government has renewed its clampdown on roadside trading following a fatal accident at the Ota tollgate in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, warning that the practice poses grave risks to public safety.
The Government described indiscriminate street trading along highways as a major contributor to avoidable road crashes, stressing that urgent behavioural change is required to prevent further tragedies.
Representing Governor Dapo Abiodun during an inspection of the accident scene, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele said residents must take personal responsibility by avoiding commercial activities on busy roads.
The crash, which occurred at the bustling tollgate axis, claimed several lives and resulted in the destruction of property, drawing widespread concern within the community.
Salako-Oyedele noted that the state had provided designated markets and structured trading spaces to ensure safer commercial operations. She expressed disappointment that some traders continue to operate along highways despite repeated warnings.
“While accidents may occur, adopting safer practices can significantly reduce their frequency and impact. We urge residents to desist from roadside trading for their own protection,” she said.
Describing the incident as especially painful due to her connection to the area, the deputy governor conveyed the condolences of the Ogun State Government to affected families and assured that injured victims would receive adequate care. She added that the government would intensify preventive measures to avert similar occurrences.
She also commended the swift intervention of the Olota of Ota, Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege; officials of the local government council; operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC); the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE); and transport unions for promptly managing the situation.
In his remarks, the Olota condemned roadside trading, stating that repeated advisories had been ignored. He sympathised with the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the deceased.
The State Government reiterated its resolve to enforce regulations that safeguard lives and property, urging residents to patronise approved markets and designated trading centres across Ogun State.
