Cyclist Dies After Truck Collision in Ikeja

A tragic road accident in Ikeja, Lagos State, has claimed the life of a cyclist following a collision with a DAF articulated truck along Airport Road.
Global Mirror News gathered that the incident occurred beneath the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge, close to the traffic signal corridor, as both the cyclist and the truck were heading from the Maryland axis. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the cyclist reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance while attempting to navigate the roundabout alongside the heavy-duty vehicle.
In a statement released by LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, the Agency disclosed that the situation escalated within seconds, leading to the cyclist being crushed by the truck and dying instantly at the scene.
LASTMA officials who arrived promptly at the location reportedly apprehended the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee after the crash. The driver was later handed over to Officers from the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with existing laws.
To restore order and ensure public safety, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) evacuated the deceased, while traffic control officers managed vehicular movement around the accident scene.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the victim’s family. He cautioned cyclists and commercial motorcyclists against using highways and other high-risk corridors, urging them to strictly comply with traffic regulations and remain within inner roads.
Giwa further noted that the Lagos State Government has continued public enlightenment campaigns to protect vulnerable road users and reduce avoidable road fatalities.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to road safety enforcement, public awareness, and the protection of all road users, calling on motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to obey traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
