Commercial Bus Driver Attacks LASTMA Officer, Undergoes Surgery

A routine traffic enforcement operation at Ojota Interchange in Lagos turned violent after a commercial bus driver allegedly stabbed a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Officer with a broken bottle, Global Mirror News gathered.

The incident occurred over the weekend when LASTMA officials intercepted a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus, bearing registration number EKY 693 YK, along the Ojota–Ketu corridor.

According to the Agency, the vehicle was flagged down for operating with its passenger door left open while fully loaded with commuters — a violation described as dangerous and capable of endangering passengers and other road users.

In a statement released by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the driver reportedly resisted arrest and attempted to evade officials by mounting the road median in a desperate bid to escape. However, his attempt was cut short when the vehicle was forced to a halt.

Global Mirror News gathered that following the interception, the situation escalated dramatically. The suspect allegedly grabbed a jagged broken bottle from inside the bus and attacked enforcement Officers.

During the confrontation, one Officer sustained severe injuries after being stabbed in the fingers of his right hand.

The injured Officer was immediately evacuated to a nearby Medical Facility, where he underwent emergency surgical intervention.

Authorities disclosed that two fingers required operative reconstruction due to fractures and significant blood loss. He remains under close medical supervision.

Despite the driver fleeing the scene, the impounded vehicle was taken into custody in line with statutory provisions.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an unacceptable act of violence against lawful authority.

He disclosed that the matter has been handed over to the police for further investigation and assured that efforts are ongoing to track down and prosecute the suspect.

Bakare-Oki warned commercial transport operators against reckless noncompliance with traffic regulations, stressing that the agency would intensify enforcement operations across Lagos to ensure public safety and orderliness.

Global Mirror News gathered that authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining discipline on Lagos roads, noting that any act of aggression toward traffic officials will be met with strict legal consequences.
