CCTV Clears Channels TV Reporter in Port Harcourt Fuel Station Assault

Global Mirror News gathered that Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage has exonerated a reporter with Channels Television, Charles Opurum, following a violent altercation at a filling station in Port Harcourt.
According to information obtained by Global Mirror News, the incident occurred on Tuesday March 25, at a fuel station in the Rumuola axis of the city, where an initial dispute quickly escalated into a physical confrontation involving multiple individuals.
Conflicting accounts had earlier emerged, with some of those involved allegedly attempting to shift blame onto the journalist. However, CCTV footage later reviewed by authorities reportedly showed that the first act of aggression came from another individual, effectively clearing Opurum of wrongdoing.
Opurum explained that the situation began when he honked at a vehicle blocking the station’s entrance. The delay reportedly led to a confrontation with an elderly man, which escalated into a physical exchange before a group of men allegedly attacked him.
Global Mirror News gathered that the reporter was surrounded and assaulted by several individuals at the scene. Amid the chaos, he alleged that a police officer attached to the station damaged his vehicle’s windshields, while he made efforts to flee the area. One of the attackers was also said to have sustained injuries during the incident.
The matter was reported to the Divisional Police Officer of the Rumuepirikom Division, CSP John Ayah, who deployed patrol teams leading to the arrest of some suspects.
According to Global Mirror News, attempts were made by some of the suspects to alter the narrative, claiming the journalist initiated the attack.
However, the CCTV footage reportedly contradicted their claims. Following the review, some individuals involved allegedly admitted fault and offered compensation for the damages caused to Opurum’s vehicle.
While he accepted the compensation, Opurum expressed appreciation for the swift response of the Police but maintained that he would escalate the matter further. He insisted that any officer found responsible for damaging his vehicle should be held accountable.
Global Mirror News gathered that the incident has once again highlighted concerns over mob actions, misinformation during conflicts, and the need for accountability among security personnel in public spaces.
