Cattle Truck Tragedy: Six Killed, 23 Injured in Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Crash

At least six persons have been confirmed dead while 23 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a fatal road accident involving a truck conveying cattle and passengers along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The crash, which occurred at the weekend, reportedly involved an overloaded truck transporting livestock alongside human passengers. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle lost control while in motion, leading to a devastating impact that left several occupants trapped.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other rescue agencies, swiftly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations. Victims with injuries were evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at a mortuary.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as chaotic, noting that some passengers were seated on top of the truck alongside the cattle, a practice authorities have repeatedly warned against. Traffic along the expressway was temporarily disrupted as rescue teams worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal vehicular movement.

Confirming the incident, road safety officials cautioned motorists and transporters against overloading and the dangerous practice of conveying passengers in goods vehicles, stressing that such actions significantly increase the risk of fatal accidents.

Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, as authorities reiterate calls for stricter compliance with road safety regulations on major highways, particularly the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
