Blood Moon Rising: Nigeria to Witness 83-Minute Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight

A breathtaking celestial event is set to captivate Nigerians and residents of several African nations tonight, Sunday, September 7, 2025.
A total lunar eclipse, popularly known as a “Blood Moon,” will transform the night sky from 8:00 PM West Africa Time, lasting an impressive 83 minutes.
The Moon will take on a striking reddish glow as it slips fully into Earth’s shadow, casting a reddish-orange hue on the lunar surface.
This phenomenon occurs when sunlight bends through the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter wavelengths of light while allowing longer, reddish wavelengths to reach and illuminate the Moon.
The eclipse will be visible across most of Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
However, Westernmost Areas may miss parts of the early penumbral or partial phases as the Moon rises closer to or during totality.
Regions with minimal light pollution, such as Yobe and Borno states in Nigeria, are expected to provide optimal conditions for viewing the eclipse.
Urban centers may still offer a good view, though city lights could reduce visibility of the subtler phases.
Unlike solar eclipses, this event poses no risk to the eyes and can be safely enjoyed without special equipment.
Binoculars or a camera may enhance the view, but they’re not necessary for a spectacular experience.
The total lunar eclipse will also be visible in parts of Europe, Asia, and Australia, making it a rare opportunity for millions of people to connect with the wonders of the cosmos.
