Blackout Hits Nigeria as National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse

Nigeria was plunged into widespread darkness on Monday following another collapse of the National electricity grid, Global Mirror News reports.

Checks confirmed that the grid went down at about 3:00 p.m., cutting power supply across several parts of the Country and disrupting homes, businesses and essential services.

Data available to Global Mirror News showed that electricity generation, which had earlier peaked at about 4,800 megawatts, suddenly crashed to as low as 139 megawatts at the time of the incident.

The exact cause of the collapse was not immediately confirmed.

However, the development occurred amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Independent System Operator to stabilise and ramp up power generation after recent gas supply challenges.

These challenges were largely linked to pipeline vandalism, which has constrained gas availability to key power plants.

As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the National grid were said to have lost generation, worsening the blackout and raising concerns over the reliability of the Country’s electricity infrastructure.

Global Mirror News gathered that grid collapses have become increasingly frequent, reigniting public frustration and calls for urgent reforms in the power sector.

Many Nigerians expressed concern over the economic impact of recurring blackouts, especially on small businesses and households already grappling with high energy costs.

Officials were yet to issue a detailed statement on restoration timelines, but sources within the power sector said efforts were ongoing to gradually restore generation and stabilise the grid.

Global Mirror News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
