ASUU Begins Two-Week Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all Public Universities in Nigeria, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour several outstanding agreements.
The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press conference held at the University of Abuja, today, Sunday, 12th October, 2025.
He explained that the strike followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025, after which no meaningful engagement was received from the Government.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025,” Piwuna said.
According to him, the Union’s decision came after an extensive National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where members expressed frustration over the Government’s failure to implement critical aspects of past agreements.
These includes, improved funding for Universities, payment of earned academic allowances, revitalization funds, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for salary payments.
Piwuna noted that the government’s attitude towards the welfare of academic staff and the development of Public Universities remained “nonchalant and deceptive,” despite repeated engagements.
He warned that the two-week strike was only a warning phase, adding that the Union might resort to an indefinite action if the issues remained unresolved after the period.
“Consequently, all Branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025,” he declared.
Piwuna urged students, parents, and the general public to understand that the action was a last resort aimed at rescuing the Nation’s University system from collapse.
The strike is expected to halt academic activities in Federal and State Universities Nationwide until further notice.
