Army Confirms Boko Haram Suicide Bomber Behind Deadly Borno Mosque Blast

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the deadly explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday evening was carried out by a Boko Haram suicide bomber.

The blast occurred on December 24, 2025, at the Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque located in the Gamboru Market area of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council during the Maghrib prayer session, sending worshippers into panic and leaving several casualties.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the attack was perpetrated by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) inside the mosque.

Theatre Command spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said the suicide bomber died instantly alongside two civilians at the scene of the explosion.

“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the spot,” Uba stated.

He added that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security Agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly responded to the incident.

According to the army, the affected Area was immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent secondary attacks and ensure public safety.

Casualties were evacuated to the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention. Lt. Col. Uba confirmed that a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“Sadly, two of the injured civilians later died at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining victims are stable and are receiving appropriate medical care,” he said.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and Northern Governors, who described it as barbaric and an assault on innocent worshippers.

Reassuring residents amid the festive season, the army said security had been intensified across Maiduguri and surrounding communities, with increased surveillance and patrols to forestall further attacks.

The Military urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement or activity to security Agencies.
