ARISE TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Killed in Abuja Robbery Attack

Tragedy struck Nigeria’s Broadcast Industry in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, as ARISE Television anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
The 29-year-old Broadcaster, who was also a trained Lawyer, was confirmed dead after the robbery turned violent.
ARISE News, in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, described her as a “cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose “voice is now silent but whose spirit, passion and legacy will endure.”
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu had transitioned from a promising legal career to journalism, quickly establishing herself as a respected anchor, reporter, and producer at ARISE TV.
Colleagues and viewers recall her as a vibrant on-air presence with a sharp intellect and warm personality.
The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident, but as of press time, no suspects had been publicly identified or arrested.
Details of whether she was specifically targeted or fell victim to a random robbery remain unclear.
Her killing has drawn an outpouring of grief and outrage. Journalists, legal professionals, and civil society groups have taken to social media to pay tribute, while raising fresh concerns about the worsening state of insecurity in the Nation’s capital.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore sharply criticized what he described as “poor Police response” and “lack of emergency support” during the attack, warning that systemic lapses continue to cost innocent lives.
The incident has amplified calls for improved security across Abuja and other Nigerian cities, where violent crimes and armed robberies remain a growing threat.
ARISE News has urged Security Agencies to ensure a thorough investigation, prosecution of the culprits, and speedy justice for their late colleague.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced by her family.
Somtochukwu Maduagwu is remembered not only as a journalist but as a lawyer and communicator who bridged worlds with courage and dedication. Her death leaves a painful void in Nigeria’s media landscape.
