APC Rallies Behind Tinubu as Abiodun Links Reforms to Ogun’s Economic Gains

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State on Wednesday formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, as Governor Dapo Abiodun attributed the State’s recent economic momentum to sweeping Federal reforms introduced by the administration.

The endorsement was the high point of the party’s Expanded Stakeholders Strategic Meeting held in Abeokuta, which drew serving and former Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, State Executive Council Members, National Working Committee representatives, Council Chairmen, Ward Executives, former Commissioners and other Party Leaders.

Addressing stakeholders, Abiodun framed Tinubu’s economic policies as foundational to what he described as a National reset. He argued that decisive steps taken at the outset of the administration prevented deeper fiscal instability and restored policy coherence.

According to the Governor, the simultaneous removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange system on May 29, 2023 dismantled structural distortions that had long undermined growth.

“What appeared to be the more visible burden was fuel subsidy, but the multiple exchange rate regime was an even greater drag on the economy,” he said, noting that the reforms signaled a shift toward transparency and market-driven mechanisms.

Citing remarks credited to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abiodun maintained that the policy changes have become a catalyst for recovery. He pointed to improved fuel supply, easing inflationary pressures, a stabilising naira and foreign reserves estimated at about $45 billion as indicators of progress.

The Governor also linked Federal infrastructure initiatives — including the 700-kilometre coastal highway and the proposed 1,000-kilometre Sokoto–Badagry superhighway — to renewed investor confidence.

He claimed increased business traffic into the Country and heightened industrial activity within Ogun State, asserting that new factories are emerging across key corridors.

Highlighting local gains, Abiodun said Ogun’s Gross Domestic Product has risen to ₦17 trillion, positioning the State among Nigeria’s leading economic hubs.

He referenced over 7,000 housing units delivered, expanded primary healthcare centres, youth and women empowerment programmes, and ongoing job creation initiatives as outcomes of deliberate planning.

He further disclosed that commercial oil drilling has commenced in Ogun Waterside following Federal approvals, and revealed plans for a large-scale dairy and cattle ranch project in Ipokia Local Government Area and Yewa South with Federal backing.

On party affairs, Abiodun described the meeting’s turnout as evidence of cohesion within the Ogun APC, stressing that unity remains central to electoral success. He also announced plans to construct a new State APC secretariat within six months.

Reaffirming his support for Tinubu, the Governor said continuity in leadership would enable consolidation of ongoing reforms beyond the current term.

He pledged a transparent transition process at the end of his tenure while commending the president for consistent support to Ogun State.

The endorsement resolution was adopted unanimously by stakeholders at the meeting.
