Anambra State Expands JSS Curriculum to Include Robotics, Trade, Entrepreneurial Skills
The Anambra State Government has launched a major initiative to equip Junior Secondary School (JSS) Students with practical and entrepreneurial skills, including Robotics, Digital Literacy, and Trade-based Courses.
The Programme, unveiled at Igwebuike Grammar School in Awka, introduces 15 new subjects aimed at preparing students to be job creators in a rapidly evolving economy.
The new curriculum includes hands-on courses such as solar installation, garment making, GSM repairs, plumbing, tiling, POP installation, event management, bakery, hairstyling, make-up, interior design, CCTV/intercom installation, information technology, and robotics.
The initiative is part of the Government’s wider effort to blend conventional academics with practical skills that meet Global Technological and Economic demands.
Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chair of the Post-Primary Schools Service Commission, said the programme is designed to foster creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among learners. “Our goal is to ensure that students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills that can translate into real-life employment and business opportunities,” she explained.
Experts, including Cyril Nwuche from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, have praised the initiative, highlighting the potential for these subjects to spur economic growth and social transformation in the State.
The Government also plans to establish entrepreneurship clubs in schools to further deepen students’ practical business and innovation skills.
The curriculum expansion aligns with other reforms, including the recruitment of additional teachers to strengthen public education in Anambra State.
Officials hope the programme will produce a generation of skilled, innovative, and economically empowered youth.
