Ambulance Mishap at Lagos Marathon Triggers State Probe

The Lagos State Government has commenced a formal investigation following an incident in which an ambulance struck a woman during the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday.

Global Mirror News gathered that the incident occurred near the finish line Area of the Internationally recognised race, which attracted thousands of athletes, officials, and spectators across the State. The development sparked public concern after a video clip of the moment circulated widely on social media.

In an official statement released late Saturday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed that the ambulance involved was part of the event’s designated emergency medical response team.

According to the statement, the vehicle was transporting athletes who had earlier required urgent medical attention when the incident happened.

Authorities identified the victim as a female non-athlete who was within the event arena at the time. Eyewitness accounts indicate that officials immediately signaled the ambulance driver to stop once the situation was noticed.

Emergency medical responders reportedly assessed the woman on the spot before evacuating her to a public health facility for further medical evaluation. Government sources disclosed that she sustained bruises and complained of chest pains but was stabilised at the scene. Her vital signs were said to be stable upon examination.

Global Mirror News further gathered that Senior Government Officials visited the hospital to assess her condition, while both the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Sports Commission are closely monitoring her recovery.

“The patient is stable and under close professional supervision,” the Government statement assured, adding that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident.

The Lagos City Marathon, regarded as one of Africa’s premier road races, maintains a structured medical response system to manage emergencies during the competition. However, the latest development has raised fresh questions about crowd control measures and operational coordination within the race environment.

As investigations continue, authorities have pledged transparency and appropriate action based on findings.
