Ambulance Driver Arrested by LASTMA After High-Speed Crash Injures Motorcyclist in Lagos
A Private Ambulance Driver was arrested on Monday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after a high-speed, against-traffic maneuver left a delivery motorcyclist with a serious knee fracture on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge inward Maryland along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the crash occurred amid heavy congestion caused by a truck fire earlier in the morning. “The residual traffic bottleneck from the truck inferno created a chaotic situation along Ikorodu Road,” Taofiq said.
The ambulance, registered BED 508 EA, was carrying a pregnant woman dependent on oxygen support. Instead of waiting in the traffic queue, the driver reportedly drove against the flow of traffic at dangerous speed, colliding violently with the motorcyclist who was lawfully navigating his lane.
Emergency responders acted immediately. The pregnant woman and her life-support equipment were safely transferred to a LASAMBUS ambulance, while the injured motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
LASTMA officials apprehended the driver at the scene. He has been handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for investigation and potential prosecution under traffic laws.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the reckless driving, reiterating the agency’s zero-tolerance stance. “Driving against traffic is a dangerous and unlawful act, and LASTMA will not compromise on road safety,” he said, urging all motorists to exercise caution during traffic disruptions.
The Agency warned that such incidents not only endanger lives but exacerbate traffic chaos, particularly in high-density areas like Ikorodu Road.
