AFCON 2027 on Track as CAF Dismisses Postponement Rumours

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be staged as planned across East Africa, dismissing speculation that the tournament could be delayed.

Global Mirror News reports that CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, on Friday February 13, refuted claims that the competition might be shifted to 2028 over concerns about the readiness of host Nations — Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Speaking after a CAF Executive Committee meeting, Motsepe maintained that preparations remain on course and that the Continental Football Body is fully committed to delivering the tournament in the three-nation format.

“We have done a lot to ensure AFCON is held in East Africa, and our commitment remains to host it there,” he stated. “I believe we will hold a very successful AFCON among the three countries. CAF will work closely with the host nations to ensure every aspect of the tournament — from infrastructure to logistics — meets the highest standards.”

Although CAF has yet to release official match dates, the competition is expected to take place in June and July 2027, ahead of Kenya’s general elections scheduled for August that year.

The 2027 edition will mark a historic milestone as the first time the Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by three Countries. East Africa last staged the tournament in 1976 when Ethiopia served as host.

CAF further disclosed that it is closely monitoring stadium upgrades, training facilities, and transportation infrastructure in the host Nations to ensure compliance with International standards and to guarantee a seamless tournament.
