8,692 Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Cases in Lagos

Lagos State Government has revealed that a total of 8,692 cases of Domestic and Sexual Violence were reported in the State between August 2024 and July 2025. According to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, domestic violence accounted for 3,685 cases, making it the most prevalent issue within the period under review.

The breakdown of the cases is as follows: 243 cases of defilement, 244 cases of child abuse/physical assault, 99 cases of rape, 48 cases of sexual harassment, and 25 cases of sexual assault by penetration. Additionally, 726 family-related disputes, 41 cases of cyber harassment, and 32 cases of threats to life were documented.

The State Government has provided various forms of support for survivors. A total of 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence received counseling, ranging in age from 18 months to 79 years.

This highlights that sexual and gender-based violence cuts across all age groups. Furthermore, 146 survivors received free legal representation, all survivors of sexual assault accessed free medical care, and 30 were accommodated in government shelters.

In terms of rehabilitation, 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators underwent therapy. The Government also provided specialized support to 13 persons with disabilities.

The top five Local Governments with the highest number of adult-related cases are Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo. For child-related cases, the top five Local Governments are Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo.

To raise awareness about the issue, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has dedicated September to SGBV awareness, with the theme “SGBV… It Concerns Us All.” The month-long activities will include Public Servants wearing purple ribbons as a symbol of solidarity, an advocacy walk against SGBV, a market fiesta to sensitize residents on gender roles and stereotypes, a Survivor’s Day to honor victims, and the Governor’s Commendation and Awards Night to recognize people and institutions championing the fight against SGBV.

During the period under review, the State secured over 140 convictions and obtained six restraining orders. This demonstrates the Government’s commitment to tackling domestic and sexual violence.

The Lagos State Government’s efforts to address domestic and sexual violence are crucial in creating a safer and more supportive environment for survivors. As the awareness month activities unfold, it is essential for all stakeholders to come together to tackle this pressing issue.
