Lagos Arrests 15 In Fresh Street-Begging Raid
The Lagos State Government intensified its clampdown on street begging with a fresh early-morning raid that led to the arrest of 15 suspected beggars across major parts of the State.
The operation, carried out by officials of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development in collaboration with the Lagos State Task Force, targeted busy spots including Oshodi, Ojota, CMS, Costain, and Ikeja Under Bridge. Authorities said today’s raid was prompted by the persistent rise in street begging despite ongoing enforcement efforts.
Officials disclosed that the arrested individuals — including adults and minors — were found soliciting for alms in high-traffic areas, with some reportedly using children and persons with disabilities to draw sympathy from passersby.
A senior Ministry Official noted that the State will not relent in removing beggars from the streets, describing the activity as unsafe, exploitative, and against the Lagos environmental and social protection laws.
“These raids are not just punitive; they are rescue-driven. Many of these individuals are victims of organised begging rings. Today’s operation is part of our commitment to protect them and ensure public safety,” the official explained.
The suspects have since been taken to Government rehabilitation centers for profiling, counselling, and possible reunification with their families.
The Government urged residents to stop giving alms on the streets, warning that such acts encourage syndicates who profit from exploiting vulnerable persons.
Officials added that more unannounced raids would continue throughout the festive period to ensure orderliness in public spaces.
