102-YEARS-OLD CLIMBS MOUNT FUJI

Kokichi Akuzawa, a 102-year-old Japanese man with a serious heart condition, has become the oldest person to climb Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak.
He achieved this remarkable feat in early August, and his record was recently recognized by Guinness World Records.
Akuzawa’s journey to the top was quite an accomplishment, considering he had a near-fatal fall and was hospitalized with heart failure and shingles earlier this year.
Despite his family’s concerns, Akuzawa was determined to climb Mount Fuji and prepared himself with rigorous training, waking up early every morning for hour-long walks and hiking mountains almost weekly.
This isn’t Akuzawa’s first time climbing Mount Fuji. Six years ago, at the age of 96, he successfully reached the summit. That experience likely contributed to his confidence in tackling the mountain again, despite his advanced age and health challenges.
Akuzawa has a long history of mountaineering, and his love for climbing has taken him to various peaks.
The climb took Akuzawa three days, with two nights spent in huts. Although the high altitude almost forced him to give up, he made it to the summit with the support of his travel companions, including a granddaughter who’s a nurse.

Akuzawa’s determination and spirit were evident in his actions, and his family was overjoyed by his achievement.
When asked about his experience, Akuzawa said, “I am six years older than the last time I climbed. I have been there and seen the view many times, it wasn’t anything special.”
However, his actions speak louder than words, and his achievement is an inspiration to many.
Akuzawa’s remarkable feat is a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication to staying active, even in his old age.
As an avid hiker, retired livestock farmer, and volunteer at an elderly care center, Akuzawa continues to inspire others with his remarkable story.
When asked if he’d climb Mount Fuji again, Akuzawa firmly said “no”, but his actions suggest that he might just take on another challenge in the future.
The Climb:
- Height: Mount Fuji stands at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet)
- Duration: Akuzawa took three days to complete the climb
- Support: He was accompanied by his granddaughter, a nurse, and other family members
Akuzawa’s achievement is a remarkable example of what can be accomplished with determination and hard work. His story will undoubtedly inspire many people around the world.
